A couple of months ago I went to the South of France. I knew it would be a good
idea to get away, to get a fresh perspective on the songs I had been working on for
the new album. On the spur of the moment, I decided to go and within a matter of
hours was on a plane to Nice. The reason I want to share this experience with you is
bacause it was a key part of the process of making the new album; the sense of what
was necessary became so clear. After spending so much time in the various great
metropolises of Europe, this was another experience of its' culture, refinement and
classic splendour, its' strength and simplicity; all the feelings I wanted to convey
in the studio.
I visited a small village called "La Coste", which lies at the foot of the ruined castle
of the Marquis de Sade, a truly amazing place which has some of the "strangest"
ambient sounds I have ever heard. I have already made plans to return there and
record some of these sounds after I have finished this current album.
These images are not just a documentation of this trip. They are a visual
representation of aspects of my journey that I found important and inspiring.
