Formed at the beginning of 1982 by vocalist and songwriter Andi McElligott (Andi Sex Gang), the band quickly made a name for themselves in the London underground scene with their intense theatrical live performances and unique brand of sound and onstage visuals.
Sex Gang Children's first EP 'Beasts' was released in June 1982 and became one of the best selling UK 12" singles, remaining in the indie charts for the next 18 months.
Their seminal debut album 'Song and Legend', released in 1983 shot straight to No. 1 in the indie charts, entering the top 30 in the UK mainstream.
Cited as an early influence by the likes of Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden and Danzig, Sex Gang Children have never compromised in their approach to the art, with songs such as Deiche, Sebastiane and Mauritia Mayer remaining to this day alternative and Goth club favourites all over the world.
In the last 20 years the band have regularly headlined the major alternative and Goth festivals in Europe. Sex Gang Children headlined the main stage at the Gothic Festival - Waregem, Belgium. 2007. They went on to headline the London Batcave's 25th Anniversary celebration in 2008.
In 2013 they released the critically acclaimed album 'Viva Vigilante!'. Returning from two sell-out concerts in Tokyo to perform an exclusive anniversary show in London, a celebration of three decades of art attack.
In 2010 and 2015 Sex Gang Children headlined the renowned Whitby Gothic Festival (WGT) in England.
Sex Gang Children were honoured to headline Wave-Gotik-Treffen (WGT), the world's biggest Gothic Festival in Leipzig,Germany, in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2013, and again in 2017 in addition to Andi Sex Gang's solo performance. The band continues to play in venues around the world including Paris and Milan, and in large festivals such as at the Fade-In Festival at the Entremuralhas Castle, Leiria, Portugal.
2016 was the UK Electric Jezebel Tour with original members coming together in support of their release "Electric Jezebel - Singles Collection A & B sides 1982-83" out on Liberation London. Tour continued on to Belgium in 2018 and Sweden in 2019. The Electric Jezebel Tour UK was in May, 2019 when Sex Gang Children original members performed. SGC headlined at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool
